Obit of the Day: Frank & Herbie
Frank and Herbie were friends for 54 years. Although from different backgrounds, they stayed together even as Herbie fought through fourteen different bouts with disease. Unfortunately Herbie lost his last battle and in January 2010 he died. Herbie was 217 years old. And a dutch elm.
Frank Knight was a volunteer tree warden in the town of Yarmouth, Maine and became Herbie’s caretaker nursing the 110-foot tree through 14 different occurrences of dutch elm disease over six decades. When Herbie was scheduled to be cut down in 2010, Mr. Knight had a good sense of perspective: “It’s been a beautiful tree. I’m sorry to see it go. But nothing is forever.”
Mr. Knight passed away on May 14, 2012 was 103 years old. Both he and Herbie had developed some level of fame in New England and were often sought out for photos.
In a morbid note, after Herbie came down friends of Mr. Knight used the wood from the fallen tree to make a casket - without telling Frank. He was eventually told and Frank and Herbie will now spend eternity together.
